First Venture into Photoshop.

The original image of ballerina was found on DeviantArt (ID: fearawaken) and the image of the house was taken by me on a recent trip to Skillman Village, an abandoned mental hospital near Princeton.







I was going for an Alice in Wonderland effect, keeping the woman larger than she would normally be and used opacity to create a ghostly image.

Gregory Crewdson

Crewdson creates his imagery on sound stages. This cinematic approach permeates through his work as we are exposed to scenes that feel somehow familiar. However, there is almost always one element that seems out of place, offsetting the supposed realism and replacing it with surrealism. His settings tend to appear deserted and dismal, while exuding a sense of melancholy. If people appear in these images, they often seem lost and withdrawn. The color palette he uses for his shots is very subdued, which undoubtedly contributes to the sullen mood of his works. As he captures these moments in time, the composition of these photographs has a painterly quality; leaving viewers to debate what medium he is working in.

Teun Hocks

Hocks' artwork shows the artist in absurd situations. His sense of humor comes across clearly in his photographs, which he fills with vibrant color after producing the image in black and white. Although the artist is pictured in his own work, it is not about him. He represents the trials and triumphs that everyone must face, except he brings light to these situations. For example, he is pictured carrying a batch of sticks. He glances down at one he has dropped. In retrospect, this is a small inconvenience. However, his candid capturing of the human experience combined with surrealist elements is what makes his photographs so interesting.

Jeff Wall

Wall derives his inspiration from other artists' work, responding to them through his own. He strives to create a statement - addressing subjects of race, gender, war, and the working class; among others. His technicality and analytical processing of subject matter comes across in the arrangement of the people in his work. They seem to be staged, as if they were appearing in a play or movie. He utilizes gesture to express what he desires. His pieces rely on human interaction as a basis for art. Wall is also well versed and writes thoroughly about each piece he creates.

Cindy Sherman

Sherman portrays the artist as actress, as she appears in the bulk of her work. Her body is the only thing that is constant as she transforms into a myriad of different characters in varying situations. Her work has been described as resembling movie stills. She explores the stereotypes that women are often subjected to in a black and white fantasy world.
